Your wedding day is full of craziness…having a photographer that is going to capture your wedding day in all its glory is essential. Years from now…you won’t remember every detail of your day but if you have a good photographers…the pictures will be worth more than you realize. I know when you are looking for vendors it can be VERY overwhelming…the number of photographers (and DJs) out there is pretty insane. So how do you pick the good from the bad?

Most of the time when we (MK Event Boutique) meet with potential clients there biggest concern about photography is that they want someone who will capture the moments and the natural flow of the day without staging and posing for every picture. This is what many people refer to as “candid pictures”. Good news is most wedding photographers have already started moving towards this kind of photography. But there are the few who have made their living off of the typical posed pictures to have that picture image. This is something you need to discuss with your wedding photographer and look for when going through their work online or in their studio. Ask yourself, “Do these people look uncomfortable?’, “Do they look natural and relaxed?”, etc. If your answer is no to a lot of these questions…this probably isn’t the photographer for you.

I personally think that your photographer’s work should tell a story. Most photographers are going to tell a story…but a few things can manipulate the story.

First: Use of Lighting Lighting is a photographer’s best friend and worst enemy. When looking at their portfolios make sure to look at the way they use light. This can really help make a decision on which portfolio you like best. Is the light so overwhelming that you lose the emotion in the picture? Or is the light is minimal that you don’t’ get a happy feeling when looking at the pictures? Every photographer is going to use light differently in his or her artistic work. So make sure to keep an eye out for the difference in the lighting.

Second: Angles

When looking through portfolios try to take an interest in the angles that the images are being taken. Are they all straight on? Or does the photographer use his surroundings to make the images look different and more appealing? Everyone has a “good side” and a “bad side” for pictures (don’t deny it) so you want to make sure the photographer you choose is going to explore all options and have a variety of angles. This will increase your chances of liking the final photos.

Third: Photography Style

Make sure when you meet with potential photographers to ask about their style. Most often they will fall into: Traditional/Classic, Photojournalism, Illustrative, Portraiture, High Fashion or Natural Light. It would benefit anyone to look through these different styles online to get an understanding for each. You might fall in love with one particular style & that could make your decision a lot easier. When looking at their style of photography also look at what they tend to capture the most. Is it the chemistry between the couple? It is the moments between the bride or groom and their family & friends? Is it the details of the day…dress, shoes, invitations, center pieces/floral, etc.? Do they seem to shy away from the dance floor or are they up in every moment? These can also be helpful when thinking about what moments in your day will be the most important to capture.

Fourth: Packages

If your potential photographers are all pretty even and you are still having trouble deciding…. look through the packages that each photographer offers in your budget. Which will benefit you the most? Do they include an engagement session? Bridal portrait session? Album? Prints? Second Shooter? Printing Rights? This is important. You want to get everything you want!

Fifth: Full Wedding Albums

If you have narrowed down your search and still cannot make a decision. Ask the photographer to see a full wedding album. This can be VERY helpful. You can see every picture they decided to share with the bride and groom. You are not limited to their “highlight albums” online that only showcases what they want you to see. I am pretty sure anyone can get a good picture or two out of thousands…so take a look at a full album to really see what they captured throughout the day.

Sixth: Personality

Getting along with your photographer and feeling comfortable around them is a HUGE thing. Don’t overlook this. You and your significant other will be cuddling, kissing and being intimate with each other around your photographer. You want to feel 100% comfortable so that your pictures portray your real feelings and emotions. If you are uncomfortable around your photographer it will show in your pictures. You will be spending a lot of your wedding day with them as well. Getting ready pictures, bride & groom pictures, family pictures, etc. So you want to make sure the chemistry between not only you and your photographer but your fiancé and your photographer as well.

There are many photographers to choose from…. especially in Dallas/Fort Worth! Talk to your planner and really discuss which options he/she thinks are best for you!
